Behind the Scenes of Disney Cars Toons - interview with Co-Directors Rob Gibbs & Victor Navon

With the near release of the next Disney Cars Toons short , on the ABC channel - I have decided to provide an interview with Co-Directors Victor Navon and Rob Gibbs.
The Cars Toon evolved from John Lasseter desire to keep these cars characters alive and come up with ideas of new stories. One of the animators in Pixar came up with the idea for “Mater’s Tall Tales” – Mater tells these stories of these fanciful things that happen in the past. John really latched onto that and asked to take some of the ideas and develop them .

Starting from 15 and narrowing them down to three that were:

"Rescue Squad Mater" -- Mater is a fire truck that rescues Lightning McQueen from a burning building. When McQueen is rushed to the hospital, he discovers that Mater is a doctor, too.

"Mater the Greater" -- Mater is a famous daredevil who does all kinds of stunts. And Lightning McQueen becomes an unwilling participant in Mater's greatest stunt ever.

"El Materdor" -- Mater is a famous bulldozer fighter in Spain. He's so good, he's able to fend off multiple bulldozers at once. Lightning McQueen joins Mater in this Tall Tale just as things are at their worst.

Both Rob and Victor worked on the original Disney Cars , when they started working on developing the characters , they were not targeting only the younger audiences. The characters and story should appeal to adults as well as kids. This is what Pixar is all about – Family entertainment with different levels of humor. The story doesn’t have to be educational or provide profound life lessons but rather make the audience think and react. We want to tell an original story and show the good and the bad – it is hard to tell a story and have the audience emphasise when the stakes are not high enough.
The attraction around Mater’s character revolves around his stories which take place in different time periods , his different customes and behaviours. He acts as a child with a great imagination and is able to touch the kid inside us all.
Mater includes McQueen inside all his stories and puts him into some ridiculous situations using his tagline “You remember – you were there?”.

Disney Cars Toons Episode 4 -Tokyo Mater

Tokyo Mater is the forth episode on the Disney Cars Toon Animated Short Series , Mater's Tall tales . The Short was originally aired on December 12 ,2008 on the Disney Channel , Toon Disney and ABC Family.

Tokyo Mater - The Story

:
At Flo's V8 Cafe, Sheriff pulls up when three of the Delinquent Road Hazards, Boost, DJ and Wingo drift past. As Sheriff races after them, Mater says that he used to be an import. He then tells Lightning what happened.

Tokyo Mater

One day, Mater was driving along the road when he spotted a car sitting by the side of the road. He asks Mater to tow him somewhere far away and Mater ends up taking him all the way to Tokyo. As Mater drops him off he notices two modified cars resembling DJ and Wingo. As he follows a group of ladies he accidentally bumps into a gang leader resembling Boost, named Kabuto, who challenges him to a race at midnight. After extreme modifications Mater comes to the starting line. The car he towed tells them that they must race to the top of Tokyo Tower and the winner will become King of all Drifters. Then he tells them that the loser will be stripped of all modifications and becomes talk. Then the race starts. After Kabuto mocks him saying that he can't drift, Mater ends up sliding through the lobby of a building and being chased by a cop. After he loses him he catches up with Kabuto but is slowed down by his posse of ninja's.

Lightning asks Mater what happened next and Mater tells him that he was there too.

Back in Tokyo, Lightning is a dragon power expert who defeats the ninja's. After he defeats them, Mater notices that Kabuto is almost to the tower. Lightning takes Mater through a shortcut thorugh a building site where Mater learns how to drift. After Mater notices that the road is out, Lightning shoots him into a pipe that blasts him ahead of Kabuto. As they race into Tokyo Tower, Kabuto knocks Mater off the tower but Mater uses his tow hook to spring him to the top and wins the race. As Kabuto is laughed at by his ninja's after he is stripped of modifications and Mater celebrates his victory, Mater says "That's how I became Tow-ke-yo Mater, king of all of the drifters".

Back in Radiator Springs, Lightning McQueen does not believe Mater, but then Mater appears with wooden boxes resembling his drifter form. Then Guido slams a box down on his hood. Mater then drives away with Lightning looking on confused.

Rescue Squad Mater is the First episode on the Disney Cars Toon Animated Short Series , Mater's Tall tales . The Short was originally aired on October 27 ,2008 on the Disney Channel , Toon Disney and ABC Family.

Rescue Squad Mater - The Story:

Lightning McQueen and Mater are driving in Radiator Springs and drive past Red. Mater tells McQueen that he used to be a firetruck but McQueen does not believe Mater. The film then shows a burning building (the gasoline and match factory) and many cars are scared. Mater is then shown as a firetruck and the fire alarm rings. Mater quickly zooms over to the burning building and shoots water at the burning building. Tia and Mia are there too and are painted white with black spots like Dalmatians. Then the film goes back to Lightning McQueen and Mater. McQueen tells Mater that he does not believe him about being a firetruck. Mater tells McQueen to remember that he was there too. The film then goes back to Rescue Squad Mater rescuing Lightning McQueen from the building and put into an ambulance just when the building blows up. McQueen is then rushed to the hospital and seen going though may doors and then seen in Dr. Mater's office revealing that Mater is a doctor too. Tia and Mia also appear as nurses. McQueen is then seen screaming as he is getting repaired. Back in Radiator Springs McQueen argue about if in is true or not by saying did not and did to when the yellow nurse drives by Mater and Mater says, "Did, too" and drives away and the film ends.

Disney Cars Toys has generated $5 Billion since the 2006 release

Since the release of the Disney-Pixar animated movie Cars in June of 2006 , the global retail sales of "Cars" merchandise have generated over 5 Billion Dollars.
The sequel movie , Cars 2 , is scheduled to be released on June 24 , 2011 and based on the recent registered domain names:
WORLDGRANDPRIX-MOVIE.COM , CARSWORLDGRANDPRIX.COM , CARS2WORLDGRANDPRIX.COM , CARS2-WORLDGRANDPRIX.COM will be named "Cars 2: World Grand Prix" or similar.
